Immigration update: subclass 186 processing times and new sponsor transparency proposals

Australian employers relying on skilled migration should be aware of two important updates. First, the Department is experiencing significant delays in processing Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) applications. Second, a new Bill has been introduced that would create a public register of approved work sponsors. Both developments may affect how you plan and manage your workforce.

Subclass 186 processing delays

The Department’s Employer Sponsored Program Delivery (ESPD) team has advised that it is managing a high volume of subclass 186 applications. As a result, assessments are taking longer than usual.

As at 31 October 2025, the ESPD is currently assessing applications lodged in:

  • April 2025 for occupations in designated regional areas
  • April 2025 for healthcare and teaching occupations
  • October 2024 for applicants nominated by an approved sponsor with Accredited Status
  • March 2024 for all other applications

These extended timeframes mean employers should allow extra lead time for permanent residency pathways and ensure applications are prepared accurately to avoid further delays.

Proposed public register of approved work sponsors

The Migration Amendment (Combatting Migrant Exploitation) Bill 2025 has been introduced to Parliament. If passed, it would permit the Department to publish a public register of approved standard business sponsors and accredited sponsors.

The register would include:

  • Sponsor name
  • Australian Business Number
  • Postcode
  • Number of individuals nominated
  • Nominated occupations

This measure is intended to increase transparency and support efforts to protect migrant workers. If the Bill becomes law, it will commence either on a proclaimed date or six months after receiving Royal Assent.
